“You must not oppress the stranger; you know how a stranger feels,
for you lived as strangers in the land of Egypt.”  (Exodus 23:9)

Catholic Church's Position on Immigration:

"In the Church no one is a stranger, and the Church is not foreign to anyone, anywhere. As a sacrament of unity and thus a sign and a binding force for the whole human race, the Church is the place where illegal immigrants are also recognized and accepted as brother and sisters. It is the task of the various Dioceses actively to ensure that these people, who are obliged to live outside the safety net of civil society, may find a sense of brotherhood in the Christian community. Solidarity means taking responsibility for those in trouble." (1995 World Migration Day Message by Pope John Paul II)

RETURN TO IMMIGRATION REFORM

Background:

On Thursday, June 7, the U.S. Senate voted against cloture and to move toward final consideration of S. 1348, Senate immigration reform legislation.  This has stalled consideration of the legislation in the Senate.   Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-NV) has indicated, however, that the Senate could return to the legislation in the near future.

Action:

Please contact your Senators today with the following message

You may:

call your Senators local or national office.

 Message:

Dear Senator ________ ,

I urge you to return to consideration of S. 1348, immigration reform legislation, as soon as possible.  This issue is too important, and too many lives are at stake, for Congress to abdicate its responsibility in this area.   I also ask that you support efforts to strengthen family unity in the bill and to make the legalization program fair and workable.

It is your responsibility to address difficult issues for the well-being of our nation so please support the passage of comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
